Bed bugs are one of the more common blood feeder species we deal with in Humboldt County. The adult bed bug is roughly 3/16 inch long and a rusty-red color. The bed bug is flat and thin when unfed, but becomes more plump and red when it is engorged with blood.
They hide in cracks and crevices during the day, preferring to rest on wood and paper surfaces. At night, bed bugs will leave these areas to feed on blood hosts. Hosts may include humans, birds, and family pets. A bed bug’s blood meal lasts three to 10 minutes, and usually goes unnoticed by the victim. The bite site may become inflamed and in sensitive individuals, itch severely.
Although the bed bug has been associated with more than 25 diseases, transmission has not been proven.
A flea is a minuscule, wingless parasites about 1/8 of an inch long, or equivalent to the size of a poppy seed. Fleas are covered in spines with piercing mouthparts and are extremely difficult to crush on contact.
Fleas live and breed on their host animal. They can jump 6 to 8 inches vertically, and 6 to 14 inches horizontally. Their heightened mobility allows fleas to spread out and more efficiently cover areas when laying eggs.
In the United States, some fleas carry pathogens that can cause disease in humans.
Ticks can be 1/8 to 5/8 of an inch long. They are an orangish-brown color, except for their dark, reddish-brown head. The body of a tick is flat and shaped like a teardrop.
Ticks are concentrated in transition areas between fields and lower grassy vegetation. You may also find them along animal trails, in host-animal nests, dens, woodpiles, burrows in the ground, stumps, logs, and crawl spaces. Ticks are known to carry and transmit diseases.
